Spiders and Rollercoasters

Where’s my sense of adventure? I have no problem with heights and roller-coasters but eek at the sight of spiders. Seriously. If no one is around to get rid of it I’ll suck it up in the vacuum. One time I covered it with a plastic cup because I didn’t have the guts heart to kill it. The few times I did muster up the courage to whack the life out of it, I took the close-eyes-and-slam-shoe-wildly-all-over-the-floor approach. This resulted in a slightly alarmed look from my cat. “What’s YOUR problem?” I said to her amidst my hysterical laughter and tears. “This is supposed to be your job.” But I digress.

I’ve grown up with the belief that men are simply more gutsy and adventurous, but I’m starting to doubt that. Two reasons: my great grandmother and Hillbilly Hand Fishing.

The image of my then 75 year-old grandmother on the Pirate’s Ship at a theme park is imprinted on my brain forever. I thought for sure she’d back out and curse us in Italian for being crazy enough to even consider making her go. She loved it. I stayed on the sidelines. My brother chipped his tooth on the safety bar.

I’ve also developed a bit of an obsession with that fishing show where the hillbilly guys show a bunch of prim and proper city slickers to catch giant catfish barehanded. The first episode I watched featured a couple of Gucci-wearing, manicured girls and a couple of rough and muscular firemen (or policemen, can’t recall). You’d think the girls would be the ones to “eek” and “ew” the whole time…they got right into that mud-colored water and whipped out a giant catfish without batting a masacara-ed eyelash. I was proud.

All this to say that I pulled up the data from Queendom’s Adventure Test and started digging into the stats. How far are men and women willing to go for that adrenaline jolt? Here’s what our research shows:
